“Over many years I’ve enjoyed wilderness camping, immersing myself in nature. So when I heard the quote “Always leave your campsite cleaner than when you found it“, it strongly resonated with me as a great directive for life. I’m passionate about leaving the world a better place, and volunteering for Torchlight is one way of doing this. One of the rewards is that my volunteering is making me a better person, helping me become more empathetic, compassionate and a deeper listener.”

“I am a fifth year University of Guelph student studying Adult Development, and work at the Alumni Call Centre on campus as a supervisor. I love hiking, decorating, reading, and making funky Spotify playlists. I hope to be accepted into the University of Guelph’s program for Couple and Family Therapy this upcoming year because it has been a long-standing dream of mine to be a counsellor.”

“I enjoy volunteering at Torchlight because I am passionate about mental health. After de-escalating a handful of suicide calls, I realize that you do not need to be a Doctor of Firefighter to save lives. I feel so rewarded every time I end a call with someone; whether they wanted to talk to someone to alleviate loneliness or they needed emotional support during a crisis situation. Volunteering at this organization continues to be a wonderful, eye-opening and humbling experience. In the future, I aspire to combine my passion for mental health advocacy and biology to educate and support individuals in the field of Genetic Counselling.”

“Just a girl trying to build a resume and get into policing. When I’m not working or volunteering you’ll find me on a hike with my dog, watching or playing baseball, spending time with loved ones, catching up on sleep or doing a spin class. I volunteer with Torchlight to make a contribution to the community. Our service is unique in that you don’t need to be in crisis, or have a specific need to be filled other than simply needing to talk. I’m happy to provide a listening ear to our regular callers and new ones maybe reaching out for the first time. “

“Currently, Bianca’s 5 year plan involves going back to school  for a certificate in Addictions Treatment and Prevention at Georgian College; getting into the military reserves as a medical assistant; and finally getting her Masters in Social Work so that she can work for the Military as a Social Work Officer. In the meantime she’s working for the Town of Oakville by day and vet clinic by night. Fun fact about Bianca: she has a prison pen pal. “

“I am currently in my Master’s degree for Counselling Psychology at the University of Ottawa with the hopes of one day working with athletes on mental preparation to help them better manage the pressures of competing. My chosen career path stems from a passion for figure skating, as a past competitive figure skater myself. In my spare time, I can be found either on the ice or spending time on my farm where I am fortunate enough to be surrounded by many animals. “

“I am currently working as a Case Manager at an Independent Medical Examination Centre. I work with a lot of doctors of various disciplines (psychologists, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, general practitioner, orthopaedic surgeons, physiatrists, etc.) and I essentially read files on claimants and I read the doctors reports  (individual assessments and multidisciplinary assessments) and other than finding grammatical and spelling errors we typically ensure that questions are answered, answers make sense, answers match watch is being asked, no injury or diagnostic is missing, and that the doctor does not contradict. In regard to hobbies, I am more of a creative type of person in that I love to draw and create things. I enjoy writing, cooking, hiking, travelling, reading, and learning new things. I am currently completing my masters in counselling psychology and I aspire to hopefully be able to apply for a Psy.D in the near future to become a psychologist”
